First published in 1944, The Secret Destiny of America is Manly P. Hall’s esoteric interpretation of American history and the philosophical ideas he believed shaped the development of the United States. Hall proposes that the American experiment in democracy was connected to a much older tradition concerned with individual liberty, religious freedom and government guided by philosophical principles.

Hall begins well before the American Revolution. He considers the development of democratic ideals in the ancient world, early systems of elected government and historical attempts to imagine societies governed according to reason and wisdom. From these subjects he develops his central idea: that philosophical and initiatory traditions helped preserve concepts that would later emerge in American political thought.

The book then moves through subjects including transatlantic exploration, Christopher Columbus, the prophecies of Nostradamus, utopian literature and the influence Hall attributed to secret societies. Francis Bacon occupies an important place in this narrative, particularly through Hall’s interpretation of Baconian ideas concerning an ideal society and their supposed relationship to the development of America.

Later chapters turn directly to the United States. Hall discusses Thomas Paine, the Declaration of Independence, the origins and symbolism of the American flag, the Great Seal of the United States and other episodes that he interpreted as evidence of a larger philosophical purpose behind the nation’s history.

Hall’s account should be read as an expression of his esoteric philosophy rather than as conventional academic history. Some of the connections and narratives he presents are speculative and are not accepted as established historical fact. This distinction is important to understanding both the character of the book and its place within Hall’s wider writings.
