First published in 1830, Letters on Demonology and Witchcraft grew from Sir Walter Scott’s lifelong interest in folklore, supernatural traditions and the history of witchcraft. Written for John Murray’s Family Library, the book takes the form of ten letters addressed to Scott’s son-in-law, J. G. Lockhart.

Scott approaches his subject as both an antiquarian and a sceptic. Rather than accepting supernatural accounts at face value, he considers how visions, apparitions and supposed encounters with spirits might arise from illness, heightened emotion, imagination, deception or deeply rooted cultural beliefs. From this starting point, he traces changing European ideas about demons, magic and supernatural agency, including the influence of Christianity on earlier pagan traditions.

The scope extends well beyond witchcraft itself. Scott discusses ghosts and spectral appearances, fairies and elves, popular superstition, fortune-telling, demonic possession and supposed magical practices. He draws heavily on Scottish and British traditions while also considering continental European examples. Historical witchcraft accusations and trials form an important part of the later discussion, including the activities of the English witchfinder Matthew Hopkins and cases in which confessions, accusations and judicial proceedings resulted in persecution and execution.

Scott was writing at a time when witchcraft was increasingly being examined as a historical and social phenomenon rather than a genuine supernatural threat. His interpretations nevertheless belong to the intellectual world of the early nineteenth century, and his explanations should not be confused with modern scholarship on witch trials, folklore or psychology.

The book remains valuable both as a history of supernatural traditions and as a record of how an influential nineteenth-century writer understood them. It also provides another perspective on the folklore and historical material that informed the imaginative world of Scott’s better-known fiction.
