Scott discusses ghosts and spectral appearances, fairies and elves, popular superstition, fortune-telling, demonic possession and supposed magical practices. He draws heavily on Scottish and British traditions while also considering continental European examples. Historical witchcraft accusations and trials form an important part of the later discussion, including the activities of the English witchfinder Matthew Hopkins and cases in which confessions, accusations and judicial proceedings resulted in persecution and execution.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eScott was writing at a time when witchcraft was increasingly being examined as a historical and social phenomenon rather than a genuine supernatural threat. His interpretations nevertheless belong to the intellectual world of the early nineteenth century, and his explanations should not be confused with modern scholarship on witch trials, folklore or psychology.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe book remains valuable both as a history of supernatural traditions and as a record of how an influential nineteenth-century writer understood them.
